House Committee Backs Red Light Camera Repeal – Marion County Criminal Lawyers Hernando County Criminal Lawyer
The Florida House Appropriations Committee has voted to back the elimination of red light cameras in Florida. Red light cameras are currently used to give citations to vehicles that fail to properly stop for a red light.
The red light cameras have been controversial from the start. Many people believe they are just revenue makers for local governments as well as state governments. A recent study has shown that elimination of the cameras would result in a 78 million dollar annual loss for the state and 77 million dollar annual loss for cities.
Proponents for the cameras argue that they make the roadways safer by helping ensure that people do not run through red lights and that they only focus on the most egregious red light runners.
The fines are typically a hefty $158 fine. The Florida House has passed repeal of the lights previously only to see the bill fail in the Senate. It will be intriguing to see if the cameras survive the 2018 legislative session.
