Bill to Prohibit Suspending Driver License for Non-Driving Offenses – Marion County Criminal Lawyers Hernando County Criminal Lawyers Citrus
Florida Sen. Jeff Brandes wants to eliminate an incongruity in state law.
The Editorial Board of Treasure Coast Newspapers fully supports his effort.
In any given year, about 1.2 million Floridians have their driver’s licenses suspended for a variety of infractions. The vast majority of these suspensions are for driving-related offenses, a logical extension of the law.
However, tens of thousands of state residents have their driver’s licenses suspended each year for offenses totally unrelated to driving. These include failure to pay court financial obligations, truancy and conviction for drug-related offenses, among others.
Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, has filed a bill (Senate Bill 1270) that would prohibit suspending someone’s driver’s license for most offenses unrelated to driving. The one exception: failure to pay child support.
Driver’s license suspensions in Florida are out of the control. It’s time to reform the system.

Driver’s License Suspensions can be one of the most difficult things to deal with. Ignoring them will not make them go away. Most of the time they just keep getting worse. Unfortunately, I have seen too many good people find themselves in a downward spiral that results in them being sentenced to jail, losing their job or becoming a burden to their friends and family. It is extremely important to discuss any thing that impacts your driver’s license with an experienced lawyer. Although this Senate bill would help, until it becomes a reality YOU MUST PROTECT YOUR PRIVILEGE TO DRIVE.
