Bill to Expand Restoration of Felon Rights – Marion County Criminal Lawyers Hernando County Criminal Lawyer
A bill has been proposed in the Florida State legislature to expand the opportunity for felons to restore their civil rights, which includes the the right to vote and own firearms.
House bill 903 has been introduced by Neptune Beach State Representative Cord Byrd. The bill would allow convicted felons who have served their sentences, completed probation and paid all fines and court costs to petition the court for the restoration of their rights. State prosecutors would then be allowed to present counter evidence as to why this person’s rights should not be restored.
As it currently sits, a convicted felon must petition the Office of Executive Clemency, a four person panel, to find out their fate. There is a significant backlog of petitions and the bill seeks to fix that issue.
There is likely to be much debate as to whether an overburdened court system can handle these claims and also how much of a priority they should be.
