Tampa Moves To Decriminalize Marijuana
TAMPA, FL – Tampa residents will soon have the opportunity to voice their opinions on a prosed local law that would decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.
Under the proposal, Tampa Police Officers will be given the ability to write citations to those caught with 20 grams or less rather than hauling them into jail. The citations would come with fines attached. A first offense would cost $75.
The city council voted 6-0 to schedule the first of two public hearings on the proposal for March 3, several media outlets have reported.
If the Tampa proposal becomes law, the city would join such other Florida communities as Miami-Dade, Fernandina Beach and Miami Beach in decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana. St. Petersburg is also considering a similar proposal.
