Florida Lawmakers Fighting for Criminal Justice Reform – Marion County Criminal Lawyer Hernando County Criminal Lawyer Citrus County
A pair of of Florida Senators, one Republican and one Democrat, both on the Florida Senate Criminal Justice Committee are working across party lines in an attempt to help reform Florida’s criminal justice system. Although the two Senators do not see eye to eye on many issues, in our justice system they both see things along the same lines.
There are many problems that have plagued the criminal justice system in Florida. There has been instability at the top, crumbling infrastructure, overly harsh penalties and a lack of help to reintegrate convicted individuals back into society.
One of the areas the Senators have focused on is the length of sentences served by those convicted in this state. The Florida legislature has had a tendency to continually increase penalties, turning misdemeanors into felonies and increasing the length of time on mandatory sentences. Those convicted of crimes in Florida tend to serve longer sentences than most other States and there is really no evidence that these longer sentences accomplish anything.
Furthermore, the Senators have expressed a desire to institute better programs for those who are coming out of prison to try and give people returning society the ability to get a job and find work instead of having to find illegal ways to make money.
