Fight for Tougher Texting and Driving Laws – Jacksonville Auto Accident Attorney Marion County
We’ve all had that frustrating moment on the highway where there seems to be that one car that is driving way too slowly, weaving in and sometimes out of their lane and is a real nuisance to the rest of the people on the roadway. After you are able to switch lanes and proceed to pass them, sure enough there they are looking right at their cell phone, sending a text, using Snapchat or liking that picture on Facebook or Instagram.
Well one Florida House Representative, Emily Slosberg is attempting to toughen the laws on those drivers. Emily has been pushing for years to make texting while driving a primary offense under state law. As it currently stands and officer can write you a ticket for texting while driving in the state of Florida if you are committing the infraction while you are pulled over for something else, such as speeding or a broken tail light. An officer cannot pull you over for texting while driving if that is the sole offense being committed, and Representative Slosberg is looking to change that.
Florida is one of only four states that do not have texting and driving as a primary offense, meanwhile traffic fatalities have risen over 18% in Florida in recent years and over 30% for teenage drivers, and many contribute this uptick in injuries/fatalities to distracted driving.
Representative Slosberg from Boca Raton, has been unable to get her bill enough traction to be passed in the State House, so she has recently gone to the Boca Raton City Council and was able to get an ordinance passed, and she now plans to try and do the same in the rest of Florida’s counties.
